I went into the Nayyi Navelli trailer expecting another sweet, small-town bahu story, and I came out wondering whether I had just watched the start of a full-blown fantasy entertainer. Directed by Balaji Mohan and produced by Aanand L Rai and Himanshu Sharma, the film is set in Meerut and releases this Dussehra, on 16 October. Yami Gautam Dhar plays Mohini, the new daughter-in-law in the Awasthi household. Addinath M Kothare leads the ensemble around her, with Anurag Thakur, Sunita Rajwar, Mita Vasisth, Aaditya Kulshreshth, Susmita Mukherjee and Prateek Pachori in pivotal roles, and G. V. Prakash Kumar handling the music.
The trailer smartly opens with a family that feels lived-in: wedding rituals, elders with opinions, and the kind of household chaos you instantly recognise. Wisely, it holds back the geometry of the bigger twist. We see enough of Mohini’s warmth to like her, enough mischief to enjoy her, and just enough mystery to make her arrival feel like the fuse rather than the fireworks. Writers Himanshu Sharma and Divy Nidhi Sharma reveal the household dynamics but not the fantasy logic, which is exactly how a tease should work.
The moment everyone will talk about is not a dramatic reveal; it is the tonal switch when Mohini stops being just the new bahu. You can almost feel the trailer take a breath and change genre mid-scene, and that pivot is what separates it from a routine family comedy. Balaji Mohan calls it a larger-than-life spin on household dynamics, and for once that description does not feel like marketing filler.
For Yami, this looks like a welcome gear-shift. After a run of restrained performances, Mohini lets her be warm, playful and a little unknowable all at once, without surrendering the character’s core too early. For Colour Yellow and Amazon MGM Studios, it is a chance to deliver an original, desi fantasy family film rather than another formula-driven festival release.
Honest verdict? Nayyi Navelli looks worth the ticket on 16 October. The trailer promises scale and silliness in the same breath, and if the second half keeps the humour intact while paying off the fantastical turn it hints at, this could be the Dussehra surprise of 2026. I am not expecting a perfect film; I am expecting a fun one, and the trailer gave me exactly that reason to show up.
