Nana Patekar, the actor who could turn silence into menace and a whisper into a roar, died on Thursday morning at his Goa residence. He was 75.
Dr. Shekhar Salkar, Chief of the Oncology Department at Manipal Hospital, confirmed the death. Patekar suffered a severe cardiac arrest at home. Doctors tried continuous CPR for around 45 minutes, but he was declared dead at 5:20 AM on October 8.
“Veteran actor Nana Patekar passed away at 5:20 AM today after suffering a severe cardiac arrest at his residence. Despite 45 minutes of continuous CPR, he could not be revived,” Dr. Salkar said.
A medico-legal case has been registered, and a post-mortem will be conducted. That means official clarity on the circumstances will follow before the industry and fans say goodbye.
From Gaman to a face the camera trusted
Patekar’s first credit came in 1978 with Gaman. The breakthrough took time, but by the late 1980s he had become impossible to ignore. In Mira Nair’s Salaam Bombay!, which was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, he was part of a film that showed Indian streets without gloss. In Parinda, his gangster performance won both the National Film Award and Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor.
The intensity came at a cost. He was stabbed while shooting Salaam Bombay! and suffered serious burns during a real-fire sequence in Parinda, spending months in hospital. The roles were not easy on him; they also became the reason audiences remembered him.
The director and the late-career run
In 1991, he moved behind the camera with Prahaar: The Final Attack, directing and starring. For that film, he trained with the Territorial Army. It was a sign of how seriously he took his preparation.
He kept working until the end. His last two releases arrived in 2026: Vishal Bhardwaj’s O’Romeo, where he played Mumbai Intelligence Bureau chief Ismail Khan, and Amazon Prime Video’s Subedaar, where he made a special appearance as Lance Naik Nana Waghmare alongside Anil Kapoor.
Where to start if you are new to his work
- Salaam Bombay! (1988) – the Mira Nair drama nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar.
- Parinda (1989) – the National Award-winning gangster turn that defined his menace.
- Prahaar: The Final Attack (1991) – his directorial debut, made after training with the Territorial Army.
- O’Romeo (2026) – a late theatrical reminder of his command, as intelligence chief Ismail Khan.
- Subedaar (2026) – his final released appearance, on Amazon Prime Video.
For a generation of movie lovers in India and the diaspora, Patekar was not just a character actor. He was one of the reasons a scene could shift from calm to dangerous in a single breath. The loss is personal for fans who grew up watching him in three languages of emotion.
