Gayatri Oberoi has a rare Bollywood filmography: one Hindi film, and it is still remembered. In Ashutosh Gowariker’s 2004 Swades, she played Gita, the schoolteacher and romantic interest of Mohan Bhargava, played by Shah Rukh Khan. The role earned her several debut awards, but instead of building a long career, she chose to walk away.

One breakthrough, then a deliberate exit

Before Swades, Gayatri had been a VJ on Channel V in the late 1990s. Her big-screen break came with Gowariker’s film, and she later described the experience as a “great opportunity” and herself as “lucky”.

In a 2019 conversation with Bollywood Hungama, she explained that she became increasingly selective about roles after Swades. Meeting real-estate entrepreneur Vikas Oberoi changed the equation further.

“I met my husband, Vikas Oberoi, and I was very satisfied with where my career had taken me. And when I met Vikas, I realised that this was something that I wanted more than doing movies and being in Bollywood,” she said.

The couple married in 2005. Gayatri was clear that she could have continued acting after marriage, but she chose not to divide her attention. “If I am committing to something, I want to give my hundred percent to it,” she said.

The life she chose after Swades

Gayatri and Vikas Oberoi are parents to two sons, Vihaan and Yuvaan. Vikas features on the Hurun India Rich List 2026 with a reported net worth of Rs 48,100 crore, placing him at number 59 among India’s richest individuals. The previous edition had estimated his wealth at Rs 42,960 crore and rank 58.

The family home also draws attention: a nine-storey bungalow in Mumbai’s Juhu neighbourhood that reportedly spans about 75,000 sq ft. Designed by Italian architect and designer Piero Lissoni, it is planned around distinct functions.

  • Two basement levels house parking and fitness spaces.
  • A separate floor includes a gym, a spa and a 12-seater cinema.
  • The ground through third floors are designed for entertaining; private family spaces start from the fourth floor.

Gayatri told Architectural Digest India that Vikas wanted the home to function with hotel-like efficiency. “It’s a home, not a hotel!” she remembered thinking, before admitting that, in function, it truly does run that efficiently.

Why Gita still matters

For movie fans, the takeaway is not just the wealth list but the performance. Swades went on to become one of the notable releases of its year, and Gita’s steadiness has kept the role alive for audiences. That Gayatri chose not to return to the screen makes the performance feel complete rather than unfinished.

Her story is a useful counterpoint to the idea that a Bollywood career must be long. Sometimes a single well-chosen film is enough to leave a mark.
