King100 First Look: Tabu’s Mahanthi Jhansi Rani Means War

Tabu's first look as Mahanthi Jhansi Rani in King100 is all controlled menace, reuniting her with Nagarjuna for his 100th film this Christmas.

King100: the first look. Video: Annapurna Studios on YouTube.

I watched the King100 first look the way most fans will: once for the surprise, a second time for Tabu’s opening line, and a third to see how much Annapurna Studios is actually willing to show. The answer is very little, and that restraint is why it plays.

The film is King100, Nagarjuna Akkineni’s 100th film, directed by Ra Karthik and produced by Annapurna Studios with T Series South. It is an action-packed emotional drama, with Devi Sri Prasad handling the score and Naveen Nooli editing. It releases worldwide on December 24. The first look arrives on Tabu’s 55th birthday and confirms her as Mahanthi Jhansi Rani, a political figure who takes oath with calm authority.

What the glimpse promises is controlled menace. It is not a plot dump or a highlight reel; it is a mood piece. Tabu speaks the line everyone will repeat, “I hate luck!”, and the title cards make the stakes plain: this time it is not love, it is war. What it holds back is almost everything else: how she and Nagarjuna cross paths, whether she is ally or adversary, and what the war actually costs. That withholding is smart.

The moment everyone will be talking about is that opening declaration, because it gives us the character’s philosophy in seconds. The title card that reframes Tabu and Nagarjuna’s reunion as war runs a close second, which is a neat way to acknowledge their older romance without repeating it.

For Nagarjuna, this is a milestone film, and for Annapurna Studios it is a chance to remind audiences why theatrical Telugu drama still hits. Letting Tabu take the first bow is a confident move, and it works. I would have liked a touch more of Devi Sri Prasad’s score to know how the sound will land, but as a first look this is exactly what it should be: enough to make the Christmas release feel like an event, even with Shah Rukh Khan’s King also in the frame. The first look does not promise subtlety; it promises theatrical, emotionally direct storytelling built around screen presence. That is a fair trade. This one looks worth the ticket.
