Small-town India, big feelings: the list

I love how a small town can hold an entire universe: nosy neighbours, big dreams, and a silence that says plenty. These are the films I return to when I want a place to feel as alive as the people in it.

This watchlist is for the movie lover who knows that setting is not scenery. In these films, the town is a character: it nudges the lovers, gossips about the odd couple, and sometimes becomes the reason a story turns. Some are crowd-pleasers, some are quiet gut-punches, but each one lets a place speak.

Dum Laga Ke Haisha (2015)

Haridwar in the 1990s is the beating heart of this odd-couple romance. Prem and Sandhya are pushed into a marriage neither is ready for, and the film refuses to turn them into easy punchlines. The town shows up in its cassette shops, Kumar Sanu songs, nosy neighbours and the small hum of a house that feels too small for two unhappy people. Watching it feels like being invited into a family quarrel and gradually understanding both sides. By the end, the town has become a witness to a love that is earned, not announced.

Sairat (2016)

Sairat begins with the rush of first love in a Maharashtra village, where Parshya and Archi’s chemistry is all teasing glances and fearless joy. The village itself is a constant, watchful presence, with its caste lines, family pride and public shame pressing in from every side. What makes it essential for this list is how the town’s judgement is not a lecture but a texture—it lives in the background and in the way people look. Watching it is like holding your breath through a love story that keeps becoming something harder. It is tender and devastating, and it never lets the place off the hook.

Cinema Bandi (2021)

A village that decides to make its own movie with a stolen camera sounds like a recipe for chaos, and Cinema Bandi is exactly that in the best way. The Telugu comedy is rooted in a small place where every person has an opinion, a skill, or a reason to join the production. It belongs on this list because the town is not just the backdrop—it is the crew, the audience, and the source of most of the comedy. Watching it feels like sitting in on a neighbourhood meeting where nobody agrees, but somehow a film gets made. It is joyful, scrappy, and full of affection for the people it is about.

Bareilly Ki Barfi (2017)

Bareilly Ki Barfi gives us a love triangle that is warm, a little messy, and full of small-town charm. Bitti, Chirag and Pritam Vidrohi circle each other through mistaken identity and letters, but the film never treats its characters as jokes. Bareilly itself becomes a character: its sweet shops, local speech and unhurried streets give the romance a lived-in feel. Watching it is like eating something sweet without being force-fed the syrup. It is the rare rom-com that knows small-town life can be funny without being cruel.

Maheshinte Prathikaaram (2016)

Maheshinte Prathikaaram takes a small-town photographer’s wounded pride and a pair of slippers and turns them into a revenge story that feels completely true. Mahesh is not a hero; he is a man whose small humiliation becomes a quiet obsession. The town around him—with its studio, its tea shops, and its familiar faces—is what keeps the film rooted in real life instead of movie logic. Watching it is a lesson in how a film can be funny and gentle without losing its sting. The revenge, when it comes, feels earned by the place as much as the person.

Kumbalangi Nights (2019)

Set on a green island village, Kumbalangi Nights is about brothers who are broken in different ways and the women who refuse to fix them. The location works like a character: water, light and small homes hold both tenderness and tension. This film earns its place because the island makes even its most frustrating men seem possible, while its women are never asked to soften their refusals. Watching it is like letting a slow current carry you through something sad and warm at the same time. It has one of the most grounded, humane endings in recent Indian cinema.

Stree (2018)

Stree uses the haunted streets of Chanderi and its small-town logic to make horror feel local. The town’s men are scared, the women have their own knowingness, and the film plays with fear and laughter in equal measure. It belongs on this list because the place does much of the storytelling: its lanes, its superstitions, and its local characters make the supernatural feel believable. Watching it is like being told a ghost story by a friend who keeps interrupting with a joke. It is the film I tell people to save for a night when they need a scare and a smile together.

These are my small towns, but there are so many more. Which Indian film makes you feel like the town is a character? Tell me your picks—I am always ready to add another place to this list.
