Revenge films where women get even: the list

I don’t always need a revenge story, but when I do, I want it to respect the cost. These are films where women don’t just perform anger; they aim it. I have kept it mostly Indian, with a couple of world-cinema detours that hit just as hard.

This list is for the days when you want consequences, not easy comfort. Each pick earns its fury, and none of them let the heroine walk away unchanged.

Kahaani (2012)

Vidya Balan plays a pregnant woman searching Kolkata for her missing husband, and the city hides her in plain sight. The film lets her search turn into a reckoning, and that slow shift is the thrill. It belongs here because the anger is not loud; it is procedural, patient, and devastating. Watching it feels like a mystery that keeps tightening until you realize the answer was aimed at you all along.

Ek Hasina Thi (2004)

Urmila Matondkar starts so trusting that her turn feels personal, not plotted. The film earns every slow-burn minute of her transformation. It belongs on this list because it treats betrayal as the actual crime, and revenge as the only language left. Watching it is like a wound that becomes a weapon.

Arundhati (2009)

Anushka Shetty anchors a gothic, full-blooded Telugu revenge saga that never forgets the woman at the centre. It mixes myth, horror, and justice with big theatrical swings. On this list it stands for scale: the revenge is not just personal, it is almost ancestral. It feels operatic and deeply satisfying.

NH10 (2015)

Anushka Sharma’s road trip turns into a fight for survival, and the film is less about winning than staying alive. The violence feels so grounded that the rage never becomes a cartoon. It belongs here because it strips revenge down to a raw, physical cost. Watching it is tense in a way that sticks with you.

The Handmaiden (2016)

A con film where the men think they are running the game, and then the women quietly rewrite the rules. Park Chan-wook directs with his usual precision, but the film’s real power is in its shifting loyalties. It belongs on this list because the revenge is intellectual, erotic, and quietly total. It feels like a puzzle that keeps changing shape.

Promising Young Woman (2020)

Carey Mulligan’s character refuses easy catharsis, and the film keeps asking where the real culpability sits. It belongs here because it is less a thrill ride than a mirror. The bright colors make the anger feel even more unsettling. It leaves you rattled, not rescued.

Lady Vengeance (2005)

Park Chan-wook makes vengeance feel like a slow, beautiful ache, and this is the one I save for when I want the full weight. Lee Young-ae’s performance turns revenge into something close to penance. It belongs on this list because it understands that getting even has a cost measured in the soul. Watching it is gorgeous and heavy.

That is my list, but the fun of a watchlist is the argument it starts. Tell me which revenge film you would add, and which one you rewatch when you need a little righteous fire.
