Romances that don't end how you expect: the list

I love a love story, but I love it more when it doesn’t hand me the ending I’ve seen a hundred times. These are romances that feel real precisely because they don’t follow the usual beats.

This list is for anyone who wants the ache, the surprise and the quiet left turn. It pulls together Tamil, Malayalam, Hindi, French, Cantonese and English films that earn their endings instead of renting the template.

96 (2018)

Ram and Jaanu meet again years after school, and the film holds that reunion in a hush. It is not about rekindling a romance so much as sitting with what the years did to both of them. I went in expecting a reunion romance and got something quieter and braver about what we carry. The camera lets memory feel like a third person in the room, and the songs land like remembrance rather than decoration.

Premam (2015)

This Malayalam film moves through different seasons of George’s life and different shades of wanting. Each chapter has its own texture, its own girl and its own lesson about how love changes shape. It understands that love isn’t a single arc, and I still think about how each chapter redefines what George is chasing. It can be playful in one stretch and quietly devastating in the next, and it never forces the later chapters to fix the earlier ones.

Lootera (2013)

A period romance that builds like a dream, with falling snow and a house full of secrets. The first half has the glamour of new love, and the second half strips almost all of it away. It breaks in a way that made me respect it more, because the shift feels inevitable rather than cruel. It is a film about love and deceit, and about what remains when the story you were told turns out to be false.

October (2018)

This is a love story that refuses to say ‘I love you’ the usual way. Dan and Shiuli share very little conventional romance, and much of the film plays out in hospitals, waiting rooms and silences. It is interested in care, attention and the strange loyalty that grows without being named. The restraint stayed with me for days, because it trusts the audience to feel what the characters cannot say.

Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019)

Set on a remote French coast, this is a story about an artist and the woman she is hired to paint. The glances do the falling, and every shared look is charged with something the dialogue doesn’t need to explain. The ending feels earned rather than arranged, and it is one of the great final shots in modern romance. It is also about looking and being seen, which makes the longing feel alive.

In the Mood for Love (2000)

Two neighbours in 1960s Hong Kong suspect their spouses are having an affair, and then begin to circle each other with immense restraint. They don’t say the thing they mean, and the film is more romantic for all the things left unsaid. Every corridor, dress and slow-motion glance carries the weight of what they cannot allow themselves to do. It is a masterclass in longing as a form of love.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)

It starts with a breakup and a sci-fi fix: what if you could erase the person who hurt you? But the film keeps circling back to the memories that made the love worth having. It asks the most honest question about holding on, and it does so with visual imagination and deep sadness. By the end, it isn’t about whether they end up together, but what it means to choose someone with your eyes open.

These seven films don’t all end in heartbreak, and they don’t all end in hope. They end in something rarer: a feeling that the love was real because the story didn’t cheat. What are the romances that surprised you? I’d love to hear your picks.
