Murder mysteries have been on a long, lucrative run. Kenneth Branagh’s Murder on the Orient Express grossed $350 million worldwide in 2017 and spawned two sequels. Rian Johnson’s Knives Out arrived two years later, made more than $300 million globally, and produced two starry Netflix follow-ups. On the small screen, Only Murders in the Building and A Murder at the End of the World have kept audiences hungry.
Now Netflix has a new international entry, and it is already climbing the charts.
What The Final Problem is
The Final Problem is a four-part Spanish thriller starring José Coronado, María Valverde, and Maribel Verdú. The title may nod to Sherlock Holmes, but the engine is closer to an Agatha Christie yarn. A retired actor, beloved for playing Holmes, investigates a murder on an island off the coast of Mallorca.
This is not the colder, moodier world of Nordic Noir. It belongs to the sunlit ‘peril in paradise’ tradition of stories like Death on the Nile and Evil Under the Sun.
The debut number
In its first week, the series accumulated 2.6 million views on Netflix, according to the streamer’s weekly viewership report. That placed it fifth on the non-English chart. FlixPatrol also lists it among the most-watched Netflix titles globally, trailing Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story and the literary adaptation East of Eden.
- Format: four-part Spanish-language mystery
- Cast: José Coronado, María Valverde, Maribel Verdú
- Week-one performance: 2.6 million views, fifth on Netflix’s non-English chart
- Early reception: every review currently listed is positive, with no Rotten Tomatoes score yet
Why it matters for mystery fans
This is the kind of title that used to arrive quietly and then linger in the top ten. It has a gorgeous location, a closed circle of suspects, and a detective with an air of performance. The twist is knowing: the man famous for playing a fictional detective now has to do the real work.
For our watchlist, that is a low-commitment proposition. Four episodes, one complete mystery, and a setting that does half the atmosphere-building.
What to do this weekend
If you like clues over gore, put The Final Problem on the list. The show does not have a Rotten Tomatoes consensus yet, but the early signals are friendly. It is also a useful reminder that Netflix can turn a local-language genre piece into a global conversation without a loud marketing push.
