A small Tamil release with a memorable premise is about to get the kind of second chance only streaming can offer. Baththa, the Vijay Sethupathi gangster drama directed by Balaji Tharaneetharan, will begin streaming on Netflix on October 29, 2026.
The film opened in cinemas on October 1 and has had roughly a four-week theatrical window. While reviews praised the direction, performances and music, the box office remained modest, with Sacnilk reporting a gross of around Rs 33 crore. That makes its OTT run the one to watch.
The boy, the gangster and the locked door
The story begins with a schoolboy, played by Sai Prithviraj, who accidentally locks a feared gangster, played by Sethupathi, inside a school toilet. When he returns to let him out, fear stops him from finishing the job. That single, contained situation becomes the engine for a film that balances humour with emotion.
Beyond the setup, Baththa works through themes of masculinity, fear, patriarchy, redemption and human relationships. Its emotional tone has drawn comparisons with the Tamil favourite Meiyazhagan in early word of mouth.
Streaming in five languages
Netflix’s release is not a single-language drop. Along with the original Tamil version, the film will be available in Telugu, Hindi, Kannada and Malayalam. That five-language plan is a meaningful one for a star like Vijay Sethupathi, whose audience sits in several states at once.
Here is the practical watchlist snapshot:
- Release date: October 29, 2026
- Platform: Netflix
- Languages: Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam
- Director: Balaji Tharaneetharan
- Cast: Vijay Sethupathi, Sai Prithviraj, Lijomol Jose, Santhy Balachandran, Ajay Ghosh, Arjun Chidambaram
- Music: Sai Abhyankkar
Why the digital run matters
For a film that collected warm reviews but a modest theatrical gross, OTT is not an afterthought; it is often where an emotional drama can find its real audience. The song Magale has already been travelling through short video and reels, which may have primed viewers who never bought a ticket.
The question now is whether a five-language Netflix window can give Baththa the reach its premise deserved. If you enjoy small-scale emotional stories built on one strong situation, this is an easy date for your calendar.
