A sequel that has been whispered about
Subhash Ghai is developing a follow-up to the 1993 hit Khalnayak, and the working title being discussed is Khalnayak Returns. Sanjay Dutt, who played Ballu in the original, is expected to return, but the project is at a stage where pages are still being written, not contracts signed.
That has not stopped the casting conversation from moving. According to a Mid-Day report picked up by Bollywood Hungama, Ghai and his writers have been shaping a new character with Salman Khan in mind.
The role reportedly on the table
Insiders describe the part as a helpful police officer who enters the story to support Sanjay Dutt’s character. The idea is that the cop nudges the narrative forward, and the writers see Salman as a natural fit for that energy. But the source is careful: the casting is not locked, because the screenplay itself is still being developed.
Ghai put it simply when asked about the reports. “It’s too early to say anything,” he told Mid-Day. “The scripting is still on, and once we have a complete script, we will know where we stand.”
The original’s legacy
The 1993 film gave us Ballu—a wanted man with an impish edge—and a soundtrack that remains part of how fans remember 90s Bollywood. Jackie Shroff as Ram and Madhuri Dixit as Ganga, the cop and the woman caught between them, shaped the original’s triangle.
A sequel that brings Dutt back to that world already has a strong hook; adding Salman as a cop would be a casting story big enough to carry a Friday announcement on its own.
Why this pairing matters for fans
If Salman does come aboard, Khalnayak Returns would pair two of the most recognisable faces in Hindi cinema. It would also be Salman’s second film with Ghai after 2008’s Yuvvraaj.
Still, this is not a green light. It is an early development signal, and Hindi cinema is full of script-stage ideas that become headlines and then quietly change shape. In practical terms, the project is still on the first rung of the development ladder: script first, then casting lock, then announcement, then shoot.
What we know and what we don’t
- Known: Khalnayak Returns is in scripting, with Sanjay Dutt expected to return.
- Known: A cop role is being developed with Salman Khan in mind.
- Not known: Whether Salman will take it. Ghai says the complete script will determine the call.
What to do with the news
Treat this as a note, not a booking link. The useful fan move is to watch for an official announcement once the screenplay is finished, and to revisit the original Khalnayak in the meantime. If the script locks the way Ghai hopes, the casting conversation will move from “being considered” to “signed” quickly enough.
