Vishwak Sen’s action-slasher and psychological thriller Cult arrived in cinemas on Friday with a quiet first day at the box office. The film, which also marks the actor’s directorial debut, collected about Rs 1.30 crore worldwide on its opening day, according to trade figures shared by Sacnilk.
Of that, the India gross stood at Rs 1.10 crore, with Andhra Pradesh and Telangana contributing around Rs 1 crore. Overseas markets added roughly Rs 20 lakh.
A modest opening with a promising evening trend
The film played across 1,240 shows and recorded an overall occupancy of 19.82 per cent. The day’s graph is worth noting for fans deciding whether to catch it this weekend:
- Morning shows: 13.55% occupancy
- Afternoon shows: 15.45%
- Evening shows: 16.91%
- Night shows: 29.82%
The near doubling from morning to night suggests that word of mouth may be kicking in, but it is still an uphill climb against a much bigger same-day release.
Two Telugu films, two very different opening days
Cult released during the festive period alongside Aadarsha Kutumbam – House No. 47, the Venkatesh Daggubati film directed by Trivikram Srinivas. That family entertainer reportedly took Rs 16.65 crore worldwide on its first day, with India net collections of Rs 9.50 crore.
The comparison is not entirely fair — one is a star-driven family film, the other an action slasher that depends on curiosity around a first-time director — but it does define the weekend’s challenge. Cult will need stronger Saturday and Sunday numbers to reach a respectable total.
What to do about it
If you’re in the Telugu states and enjoy psychological thrillers, the rising night occupancy makes the next two days the test to watch. The film’s genre positioning is more niche than a festive family drama, so this is a word-of-mouth play rather than a guaranteed event film.
Who made it
Cult stars Vishwak Sen alongside Gayatri Bharadwaj, Tarak Ponnappa, Murali Sharma and others. Tharun Bhascker wrote the dialogues, Ravi Basrur composed the music, and Arvind Vishwanathan handled cinematography. The film released in Telugu, Hindi, English, Japanese and Spanish.
