The best Malayalam films of the last decade: the list

I’ve been rewatching these Malayalam gems from the last ten years, and each one earns its place. They’re the films I push on friends who ask where to start, full of heart, craft, and stories that stick.

This list is for movie lovers who want a decade of modern Malayalam cinema in one emotional, satisfying sweep. Start anywhere, but keep tissues, patience, and a little room to be surprised.

Premam (2015)

Premam feels like sitting with an old friend. It catches the heartbreak and chaos of growing up without ever feeling staged, moving through the loves and losses of its hero with sunlit ease. The music, the friendships, and the small-town rhythms make every phase feel personal. It is the film I rewatch when I want to remember how first love felt.

Maheshinte Prathikaaram (2016)

This one made me root for a man who just wants his peace after a public embarrassment. Mahesh’s small, stubborn attempt to reclaim his dignity becomes a gentle revenge story set in a town where everyone knows his name. The comedy is kind, the pacing is patient, and the supporting characters are wonderfully lived in. It rewards you for simply spending time with it.

Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum (2017)

A small theft turns into a quietly brilliant look at how people lie, love, and survive each other. What begins as a stolen chain keeps shifting shape across a police station and a marriage. I was hooked by every awkward pause and the way the film finds big drama in small, telling details. It is funny, tense, and deeply human all at once.

Kumbalangi Nights (2019)

Four brothers and a broken home feel so real that I forgot I was watching a film. Kumbalangi Nights is about family as a place that can fail you and still heal you. It broke my heart and then put it back together, one fragile act of love at a time. The performances are so natural that the house begins to feel like a place you know.

Sudani from Nigeria (2018)

A football story that becomes a story about home, belonging, and the families we find. Sudani from Nigeria takes an unlikely bond and treats it with enormous warmth and honesty. It made me laugh at the right moments and tear up at the wrong ones. You do not need to know football to feel every kick of its heart.

The Great Indian Kitchen (2021)

This one turns a kitchen into a battlefield without raising its voice. The Great Indian Kitchen follows a woman’s daily labour and the quiet, relentless expectations around it. I left it angry in the best way and ready to talk about the unseen work that holds a household together. It is a masterclass in using the smallest spaces to say something big.

Minnal Murali (2021)

A superhero origin from a small Kerala town that feels like our own. Minnal Murali builds its cape story from local rivalries, small dreams, and a community under one sky. It made me believe in a desi superhero without a single Hollywood beat. The action and the emotion both land because the film stays rooted in its place.

These seven are my starting eleven, but the real joy of Malayalam cinema is how much more there is to discover. Tell me the film from the last decade that you would add to this list.
